Blisters are a common, persistent and at times painful issue. There are a number of reasons that can contribute to causing blisters but the underlying cause is friction and moisture.
Friction is caused by high pressure areas such as bony prominences coming into contact with things like a stiff shoe, tight lacing and incorrect lacing techniques.
Moisture is another cause for blisters. Excessive moisture build up can increase the risk of blister formation as it decreases the skins overall integrity Wearing socks with shoes can decrease the likelihood of blister formation and ensuring the materials on both the socks and shoes are breathable can absorb this moisture.
Common things to ensure you are more likely to be blister free:
- Ensure your shoes fit appropriately both width and length
- Ensure the lacing technique is suitable for your foot type
- Taping and strapping of high pressure areas
- Wearing socks with shoes
